Adventure

As I think back on my childhood the word adventure comes to mind.

I lived during that time in history when it was safe for children to “roam the streets.”

Neighborhood kids would run in packs enjoying one adventure after another. Stopping in for lunch and then returning for dinner our parents really had little idea what we were doing.

Between creeks and wooded areas I had one adventure after another allowing my imagination to run wild.

I was watching my grandsons yesterday creating their own adventure in the big puddle that had accumulated in their gravel driveway.

As the youngest “dug for treasure” the oldest tried to figure out a way to dig a trench to help alleviate the “ water gap” as he called it.

With tractors, and shovels, hoes and orange safety cones they played contentedly all the while  trudging through the puddles in their rubber rain boots.

At one point the youngest announced that he was soaking wet, and needed to take a shower. After closer inspection, it was only his arms that were elbow deep in water.

As I thought about the “magical” childhood these two were living I couldn’t help but thank God for this blessing of country living.

Photoshoot

This past weekend I attended Brittany’s baby shower at her friend’s mother’s home. It was a photographer’s delight there, and I could have spent a lot longer photographing her beautiful home.

I snapped a few photos with my i phone, but I’m thinking once we move to our new home I’ll dust off my old camera, and challenge myself to learn a thing or two more about photography.

I’m sharing some of the photos I took this weekend.

Sold

Praise be to God! Our house sold this weekend!

We will be closing at the end of June. Our builder is confident that the house will be ready by the end of June as well.

We have a lease back on our Euless home into July, so it looks like everything will work out.
Remarkably it also looks like we will be able to pay cash using the proceeds from our home and property in Wolfe City sale. What a blessing for sure.

God really has guided our path in this move as well, and we give Him all the glory.

Let There Be Light

It’s been a long day, but even in the rain Brittany and I and the boys were able to check out the house. You’ll be happy to know, according to Brittany, that the electric fence is working just fine. 😳

It looks like the electrician is just about done. We were excited to see faces on the cabinets, fans hanging from the ceiling, and lights throughout the house.

The outdoor lights looked especially nice, although sadly I didn’t get a good picture of the front of the house. I went ahead and took a video instead to send to Chuck.

We had seven showings on the house today, and so far have two already booked for tomorrow. There will be an Open House on Sunday, and hopefully we might have an offer or two by then.

Putting it in God’s hands.

On the Market

Well it’s official!

The house goes on the market Friday morning.

We are excited to have Debbie as our realtor once again.
We are praying for a quick sale.

“Good Enough for Kids”

I received some heartbreaking news today via Facebook. One of my beloved former students had unexpectedly passed away leaving behind a husband, and a son in middle school.

It’s always difficult to wrap your brain around this kind of news, and having lost my own mother early in life I have some understanding of what her young son must be feeling.

As I think back on Sarah so much comes to mind. Although, as teachers we love all our students, some just hold a little more special place in our hearts. I was Sarah’s second grade teacher when I taught in Cedar Hill, and she is one student I’ve never forgotten.

Sarah was the kid who I would have picked to be trapped with on a deserted island. Selfishly, this was based on her mad survival skills learned through her time in Girl Scouts. If I was with Sarah I knew I would make it out alive and well.

My most fond memory of Sarah, though, happened one year when I was decorating our class Christmas tree with handmade ornaments I had made for each child. I had cut them out of felt, and had written each child’s name in glitter glue.

Unfortunately they had not turned out quite as nicely as I had envisioned, and I remember lamenting the fact to Sarah as she stood by watching me decorate the tree.

Her response is something I have remembered for almost forty years, and have shared with many people over the years. You know the old saying, “Out of the mouths of babes,” well hers was so full of wisdom it took me aback, and made me realize what was really important.
She said, “Don’t worry, they are good enough for kids.”

What she meant wasn’t that kids don’t deserve quality gifts, but rather that she loved and appreciated the fact that her teacher cared so much for her to spend hours cutting, and gluing individual ornaments for each child.

In a pre-Pinterest world she understood that things didn’t have to be perfect in order to be “perfect” or as she said “good enough.”

As I raised my own daughter years later I always treasured those words in my heart, and even today with my two grandsons I remember them.

Kids don’t require everything to be the biggest and the best. Just knowing you love them is what matters most. Spoiling them with simple little outreaches of love is sufficient.

When someone passes too soon from this world there are so many unanswered questions. So many things we don’t know or understand. What I do know for sure, though, is that Sarah made a difference in my life, and I’m sure she did the same for many others as well.

Over the last several years I’ve enjoyed keeping up with her, and watching her mothering her growing son. I know how lucky he was to have her, and he will carry with him all the lessons she taught him.

Now I pray for peace that passes all understanding for her family. I reach out to her mother Donna with my heartfelt condolences, and to her brother Ben, and her husband and son, and all who loved Sarah.

Big Brother

The oldest grandson got to help his Dad put together the crib for the impending arrival of his new baby brother in July.

I couldn’t help but remember him helping to assemble the crib when he was two when his family first moved to a Comanche.

According to his parents he did a good job both times.

You gotta love that kid!
